For those who aren't seafood aficionados or haven't been to New England, a lobster roll is a classic meal that you'll find everywhere from the local McDonald's to the priciest restaurants in the city. It usually consists of lobster meat tossed with mayo served cold on a bun. Trust me when I say that explanation doesn't do them justice--they are delicious. But here's the thing, I eat a lot of things but mayo is not one of them. (On the other hand, make it from scratch and call it aioli and I'll be your biggest fan!) With this being the case, I thought the Boston favorite just wasn't for me. Until I found Neptune Oyster in Boston's North End. This place is certainly not under the radar, it has found it's way to the #1 spot on Yelp and their lobster roll is a big part of it. They serve it cold with mayo or hot with butter. I guess by now you can guess which one I get. This hot lobster roll is so special that Kevin and I take nearly all of our out of town guests here at some point. It's funny how something so simple can be so delicious.
When it comes to food, sometimes simple is better. As far as I know, this lobster roll contains just 3 ingredients: large chunks of lobster meat, butter, and a grilled bun. In fact, it would be so simple to make at home. Paired with my favorite french fry recipe, it's a complete meal. Trust me, you won't regret trying this at home for a an upscale casual dinner. Or next, time you're in Boston swing into Neptune Oyster. You just might see me there!

My mom would be all about this:) I remember a few years ago when they did a blind taste test of around 50 lobster rolls from places in and around Boston and they had 5 top chefs and no one could believe it when they chose the McDonald's one in the top 3.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea about that! That's pretty hilarious :)

Thanks for hosting Jessica! This has got to be one of the most deliciously simple meals ever. Although I highly recommend buying lobster meat already broken down for you because the whole live lobster thing is the opposite of simple!

DeleteJust found your blog through the link-up and the first thing I see is a lobster roll. The second thing I see is you're in Boston. I grew up right outside the city and still live here and I LOVE lobster more than anything else. Lobster rolls with butter are my favorite, too! I like mayo but not on my lobster! So glad to have found your blog! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a small small world blogland is. I popped over to see your blog and saw that you had some lobster recently too. I love this time of year in Boston. Thanks for stopping by!
